Hurricane Debby hits Florida

Flooded streets and gusts of 130 km/h. Hurricane Debby is sweeping the west coast of Florida. More than 200,000 homes are already without power, a state of emergency has been declared. In Georgia, the neighboring state, residents are preparing for the hurricane’s arrival by preparing sandbags to deal with potential flooding. A few days ago, Debby was just a storm, it strengthened very quickly because all the ingredients were there: an ocean at more than 26 degrees and at least 50 meters deep, which causes evaporation, big clouds and heavy rain. If the winds blow in the right direction, a hurricane eventually forms.

More than a month ago, Hurricane Beryl caused dozens of deaths in the Caribbean, Louisiana and Texas. The season promises to be intense with a year busier than normal in cyclones. An American institute predicted last May 17 to 25 storms with 8 to 13 of them turning into hurricanes.
