Tennis: Denis Shapovalov keeps his points and his winnings

Canadian Denis Shapovalov will retain his ranking points and prize money after appealing his quarter-final disqualification from the Washington tournament, the ATP announced Monday.

Shapovalov lost the first set 7-6 (5) to American Ben Shelton and was trailing 6-3 in the second-set tiebreaker on Friday when he threw his racket to the ground and began yelling at a spectator.

As Shelton prepared to serve with three match points, Shapovalov, 25, got into another argument with a fan.

The referee gave him a violation for unsportsmanlike conduct and summoned a supervisor. The game ended that way.

On Monday, the ATP announced that the loss of ranking points and prize money, which is automatically applied upon disqualification, was a disproportionate punishment for Shapovalov’s actions.

He will still have to pay the fine of US$36,400.

Shapovalov will return to action at the National Bank Open on Wednesday in Montreal, facing a player from qualifying.
