Drowning in the Olympic Pool

A 20-year-old man was found dead in the Olympic Basin in Parc Jean-Drapeau on Sunday evening in Montreal, while the Osheaga music festival was taking place.

At around 7:45 p.m., the Montreal Police Department (SPVM) received reports of an individual who appeared to be “bathing or swimming” in the Olympic Basin, a legacy of the 1976 Games that today hosts rowing, canoeing and dragon boat competitions.

The police were then deployed to the scene and called the fire brigade for help. Around 9 p.m., the young man’s body was found. He is believed to have drowned, according to initial reports.

The SPVM transferred the file to the coroner’s office.

The Olympic Basin runs along Notre-Dame Island, which is one of the two islands that make up Parc Jean-Drapeau. The other island, Sainte-Hélène Island, hosted the Osheaga festival last weekend.

The Canadian Press could not confirm whether the young man who died had attended Osheaga. Evenko, the event’s promoter, had not responded to a request for comment at the time of publication.
