A question of governance of school networks

Nearly a million children will be starting or returning to Quebec’s public school system later this month. With that comes various elections related to the governance of the English and French systems. Unfortunately, these systems have their flaws.

In today’s networks, incumbents have many advantages over competitors, making it difficult to vote against them. Term limits would prevent individuals from becoming too powerful and would better reflect the will of the people.

Implementing term limits would help reduce abuses of power, protect the public service from those seeking personal gain, and level the playing field. Term limits would also improve the competitiveness of key positions, by emphasizing merit rather than seniority.

Furthermore, I believe that serving multiple consecutive terms does not provide any real benefit to the school system and should be eliminated. It simply perpetuates the status quo and hinders progress, which does little to inspire confidence.
