The North Korean army stationed on the border with its southern rival now has“Updated Tactical Attack Weapons”according to Kim Jong-un, who claims to have them “personally designed”. A ceremony for “the transfer of 250 new-generation tactical missile launchers” was held in Pyongyang on Sunday, August 4, under the leadership of the North Korean leader, the state agency KCNA reported.

Each of the launchers can hold four missiles, Han Kwon-hee, a member of the Korea Defense Industry Research Association, was quoted as saying by AFP. He said it was the first time Pyongyang had publicly disclosed figures for a weapons deployment to its border forces.

The arms transfer comes as Seoul has resumed its anti-Kim Jong-un propaganda via loudspeakers and Pyongyang resumed sending balloons filled with garbage to South Korea in late July.

The North Korean leader said the transfer of the weapons, which came as the country recovered from floods in July, was a “manifestation of firm will” [du] party to continue strengthening defense capabilities.” The North Korean leader had described “false rumor“ur” reports in South Korean media that floods in the north of the country had killed up to 1,500 people. He said no one had died and that 5,000 people had been taken to safety.

In his speech, the North Korean leader noted that his country was facing a “significant change in strategy due to the transformation of US-led alliances into military blocs based on nuclear weapons”a development which he says requires improved deterrence capabilities.
