(Paris) American Simone Biles won her seventh career Olympic gold medal on Saturday when she won the artistic gymnastics vault event at the Paris Olympics, with Canadians Ellie Black and Shallon Olsen finishing sixth and eighth, respectively.

Biles, who earned her 10e Olympic medallist, all colours combined, collected an average of 15.300 points to earn his second gold medal in this event at the Olympics, eight years after his triumph in Rio.

Brazilian Rebeca Andrade, who finished second in the all-around competition on Thursday, once again took second place on the podium, ahead of American Jade Carey.

Black, of Halifax, averaged 13.933 points, while Olsen had a 13.366 after a failed landing on her second jump. Olsen and Black had qualified seventh and eighth, respectively.

Black won gold in the event at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima and bronze at the Toronto Games five years earlier. She also has two Commonwealth Games silver medals.

She finished sixth in the women’s all-around earlier this week at her fourth Olympics.

No Canadian woman has won an Olympic medal in artistic gymnastics. Black’s fourth-place finish on balance beam in Tokyo was Canada’s best result in any women’s event.
