Jose Pupo’s Cuban Family Cocktail

This text is part of the special Pleasures notebook

Jose Pupo is a Cuban rum aficionado and a formidable storyteller. For over 30 years, he has been introducing the richness and subtleties of this alcohol to tourists from all walks of life, while telling epic stories of Caribbean pirates who invented barreling or festive family evenings at his mother’s house, whose crystal glassware you must not touch. A real phenomenon! During one of our visits to the small cigar bar he runs at the Grand Muthu Almirante Beach, Jose Pupo showed us the simple recipe – and infinite variations – for his Cuban family cocktail. “At the end of a family meal, when it’s time for dessert, we usually drink a cocktail made with white rum and fresh fruit from the garden. Everyone makes their own cocktail with whatever they want, just like that,” he says.

For 1 cocktail

Ingredients

1 oz to 2 oz (30 to 60 ml) Cuban white rum
100 g (½ cup) fresh ripe exotic fruits (pineapple, guava, mango, watermelon, etc.), cut into coarse pieces

Preparation

1. Pour the rum into a glass and add pieces of the chosen fruit(s).

2. Crush the fruit in the glass using a pestle.

3. Once the fruit pieces are pureed, add ice cubes, and mix the contents with a spoon or, if you have one, a sugar cane stick.

Idea : Jose Pupo suggests repeating the experiment with local Quebec fruits, such as peaches or small, ripe red fruits.
