Several senior Hamas and Hezbollah officials targeted by Israel have been assassinated. Iran and the Lebanese party intend to retaliate, as Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah announced on Thursday, August 1.

Two senior Hamas officials and the military leader of Hezbollah have been assassinated in recent days. These three killings were wanted by Israel. Mohammed Deif was the head of Hamas’ armed wing in Gaza, and above all the mastermind of the attacks of October 7. He was killed during an Israeli strike on Gaza. Also on the list of men to be killed by the Israeli Minister of Defense was Ismail Haniyeh, Hamas’ number two. He was killed in Tehran, the Iranian capital.

In a rare move, Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, read the funeral prayers in his honor. This assassination in the heart of Tehran is a humiliation for the mullahs. “It’s a big slap in the face for Iran, which invited Haniyeh. The same day, he was assassinated. (…) Iran cannot sit idly by”analyzes Antoine Basbous, director of the Observatory of Arab Countries. The head of the Lebanese Hezbollah, Hassan Nasrallah, promised Thursday, August 1, that he would take revenge on Israel.
