Paris Olympics: Montreal swimmer Ilya Kharun wins bronze medal in 200m butterfly

Montreal swimmer Ilya Kharun won the bronze medal in the 200-meter butterfly at the Paris Olympics on Wednesday.

Kharun covered the distance in one minute 52.80 seconds, a new Canadian record. He is the first Canadian to win an Olympic medal in a men’s swimming event since Ryan Cochrane in 2012.

Frenchman Leon Marchand (1:51.21) and Hungarian Kristof Milak (1:51.75) won the gold and silver medals respectively.

Kharun, 19, who grew up in Las Vegas, will also compete in the 100m butterfly event, starting Friday.

Summer McIntosh reached the final of the 200m butterfly at the Paris Olympics.

The 17-year-old from Toronto, who has already won a gold and silver medal in the French capital, posted the fastest time in the semi-finals in 2:04.87.

McIntosh is also a two-time world champion in the 200m butterfly. The final is on Thursday.

On the other hand, her compatriots Kelsey Wog and Sydney Pickrem qualified for the semifinals of the 200m breaststroke after taking 12th and 13th places, respectively. Only the top 16 swimmers earned a bye to this stage of the competition.
