There will be no Olympic medal for the French rugby 7s team. The French women, favourites for the match, were beaten by Canada in the quarter-finals of the Olympic tournament on Monday 29 July at the Stade de France. After a good start to the match by the Canadians and a first try scored in the middle of the first half, the French women were more offensive, before being rewarded with a try from Iän Jason, his fifth in the competition, in added time. At half-time, the score was seven all.

Back on the pitch and encouraged by the crowd who were on their side, the French team scored a second try just after the restart, through Yolaine Yengo. Ahead (14-7) with three minutes to go in the match, the Blues then conceded two tries in quick succession, before finally losing (14-19).

Olympic vice-champions in Tokyo, the Blues, who dreamed of gold at home, will not have the opportunity to imitate the men’s team, and must give up their hopes of a medal. Qualified for the semi-finals, the Canadians will face Australia or Ireland on Tuesday for a place in the final.

“It’s a huge disappointment, we didn’t come for that, said Lou Noël after the meeting. We know we are capable of beating them, it is a mistake that costs us dearly. They were better, but we should have done much better,” she analyzed.
