The French government said many communications cables had been targeted by vandalism, affecting fibre optics as well as landline and mobile phone networks, as cities across the country hosted the Paris Olympics.
The extent of the acts is still unclear, as is their impact on Olympic activities. These acts of vandalism come after numerous railway lines were sabotaged in France last Friday, a few hours before the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games.
Marina Ferrari, the Secretary of State for Digital Affairs, published on the X platform that the damage observed during the night from Sunday to Monday affected many telecommunications companies. She added that outages at customers of fiber optic services, as well as fixed and mobile telephone networks, had been recorded in some sectors.
Telecommunications companies said they were on the ground to assess the damage and carry out necessary repairs.
