Parks Canada officials say they are making progress fighting wildfires in Jasper National Park in Alberta.
In an update posted Sunday evening on social media platform X, Parks Canada said its teams were busy on multiple fronts, while the Canadian Armed Forces worked to extinguish residual hot spots near the northwest side of the city.
With temperatures in the region expected to hover around 25 degrees Celsius this week, national park teams say it is essential to keep moving forward at this time.
Among the efforts, a 12-inch sprinkler line will be installed along the firebreak near the town. This measure “will help protect the community from the spread of fire from the west and north,” it was noted.
More than 20,000 people living in and around the isolated Rocky Mountain community, four hours west of Edmonton, were ordered to evacuate Monday due to wildfires.
Parks Canada estimated that 30% of Jasper’s buildings were damaged by the wildfires.
