Diving | Bronze for Nathan Zsombor-Murray and Rylan Wiens

Nathan Zsombor-Murray is the first Quebecer to medal at the Paris Olympics. He and his teammate Rylan Wiens were impressive in the 10m synchro on Monday morning, winning the bronze medal.

This is the first medal for a Canadian diver, among men, since Alexandre Despatie in 2008.

The representatives of the maple leaf started the competition very well; they were in second place, equal with the British Tom Daley and Noah Williams after two dives.

On the third jump, a 3 1/2 tuck back flip, Zsombor-Murray narrowly overshot the vertical on their entry into the water, which cost the duo a few execution points. The latter recovered well on the fourth jump, a 4 1/2 tuck forward flip, despite a more laborious entry into the water on Wiens’ side. They were third in the standings, behind the Chinese and the British, who took gold and silver respectively.

On the fifth jump, the Canadians scored fewer points than their closest challengers, the Mexicans, but still held a nine-point lead over them. On their sixth pass on the platform, they executed a 2 1/2 backflip 1 1/2 pike twist, which earned them a respectable 79.68 points. That was enough to defeat the Mexicans and secure the bronze medal.
