The athletes, including two French men and two French women, are today setting off to tackle the legendary Teahupo’o wave.

French Polynesia is in turn in the Olympic bath. The surfers qualified for the competition will take to the famous Teahupo’o wave, located on the outskirts of a coastal village of the same name, southwest of Tahiti, on Saturday, July 27. The powerful wave, 2.50 to 3 meters high, is considered by some surfers to be the most beautiful in the world.

For this first day of competition in Tahiti, the 48 best athletes in the discipline, men and women alike, have a date with the first series of the first round. On the French side, Joan Duru and Kauli Vaast have already jumped in the water. Duru won his heat to qualify directly for the 2nd round. A little later, Kauli Vast took second place in his heat, behind the American Griffin Colapinto, and will have to play a repechage. Vahine Fierro easily qualified for the third round by finishing first in her series with a score of 11.17. In the middle of the night in mainland France, Johanne Defay will also take off, as the intensity of the wave diminishes.
