Israel | Ten dead, 34 injured after rocket fire targets annexed Golan

(Majdal Shams) Israeli rescue services announced on Saturday that rocket fire from Lebanon on the annexed Golan Heights in northern Israel had killed ten people and wounded 19, with the Israeli army accusing Hezbollah of being behind the attack.

Ten people were killed in a strike in Majdal Shams, Magen David Adom, the Israeli equivalent of the Red Cross, said in a new report, adding that 19 people had been injured, six of them seriously.

Israeli police and the army confirmed that rockets hit several sites in the Israeli-occupied Syrian Golan Heights, including one that hit Majdal Shams. The city is located on the border between northern Israel and southern Lebanon and borders Syria.

The army blamed the deadly shooting on Hezbollah, which denied being the perpetrator.

Helicopters, ambulances and mobile intensive care units have been deployed to the site, the military said.

“We arrived at a football field and saw destruction and objects on fire. Wounded people were lying on the grass,” rescuer Idan Avshalom said in a statement released by Magen David Adom.

An AFP correspondent reported that medics were carrying wounded people on stretchers from the site of the rocket strike in Majdal Shams, adding that several members of the Israeli security forces had been quickly deployed to the area.

“Northern District Police officers and bomb disposal experts are currently securing the area to prevent any further risk to the public,” police said in a separate statement.

The rocket attack came after a Lebanese security source said four fighters from the Iran-backed Lebanese Islamist movement Hezbollah had been killed by an Israeli strike in southern Lebanon.

Hezbollah has confirmed the death of four of its fighters. The movement has been exchanging cross-border fire with the Israeli army almost daily since the start of the war in the Gaza Strip, triggered by the attack launched on October 7 by Hamas in Israel.

Hezbollah says its attacks on Israel are aimed at supporting its ally Hamas and the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.
