Swimming | Summer Mcintosh brings Canada its first medal

Canada’s Summer McIntosh won silver in the 400m freestyle on Saturday, Canada’s first medal of the Paris Olympics.


McIntosh was beaten by Australia’s Arianne Titmus, with American Katie Ledecky taking the bronze.

Summer McIntosh is competing in her second Olympic Games. At the previous edition in Tokyo, she placed fourth in the 400m freestyle and the 4x200m relay. McIntosh was 14 at the time.

She also finished 11the rank in the 800m, and missed the final of the 200m freestyle by a quarter of a second.

McIntosh, 17, is a Toronto native. In less than an hour, she will compete in the 4x100m relay.

Final Direction

Before McIntosh’s performance, Canada’s Maggie Mac Neil finished fourth in the 100-metre butterfly semifinal. She completed the race in 56.55 seconds, qualifying for the final.

Mac Neil had won gold in the same event in Tokyo, at her first games. She had also won silver in the 4x100m freestyle relay, and bronze in the 4x100m medley relay.
