Boxing | Samoan coach dies in Olympic village

(Bobigny) The coach of the Samoan Olympic boxing team Lionel Elika Fatupaito died on Friday in the athletes’ village in Seine-Saint-Denis, at the age of 60, after suffering a cardiac arrest, we learned on Saturday from the Bobigny public prosecutor’s office.


The International Boxing Federation (IBA) offered “its deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues” in a statement on its website.

The coach was in his room with an athlete when he fell ill at around 10:20 a.m., a police source said.

Despite being treated by the fire brigade and emergency services (SAMU), he died “of natural causes”, the prosecution said, adding that no medico-legal obstacles to burial had been put in place.

The investigation has been entrusted to the Seine-Saint-Denis judicial police.
