“Wonderful moments of beauty, joy, rich in emotion and universally acclaimed” but… The Conference of Bishops of France (CEF) deplored, Saturday July 27, “scenes of derision and mockery of Christianity” during the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games.

While the scenes are not specifically discussed, a highlight of the ceremony was a tableau titled “Festivity,” which begins with an image of a group at a table, including several drag queens, reminiscent of the Last Supper, Jesus’ final meal with his apostles.

“We think of all the Christians on all continents who have been hurt by the outrageousness and provocation of certain scenes. We hope that they understand that the Olympic celebration extends far beyond the ideological biases of a few artists.”write in a press release the CEF and the organizers of the “Holy Games”, a program of the Catholic Church to reconcile sport and faith.

“Sport is a wonderful human activity that deeply rejoices the hearts of athletes and spectators. Olympism is a movement at the service of this reality of unity and human fraternity. Let the field of competitions bring truth, consolation and joy to all!” concludes the press release.

Voices on the right, and even more so on the far right, were also outraged by the opening ceremony “wokeist”with, among other things, a vision which “seeks to ridicule Christians”. “To all the Christians of the world who watched the opening ceremony and (who) felt insulted by this drag queen parody of the Last Supper, know that it is not France that is speaking but a left-wing minority ready for any provocation”launched the far-right MEP Marion Maréchal, on the social network X on Friday evening.
