French team sports are in the spotlight on Saturday with the men’s rugby 7s, handball, basketball and football teams, the women’s water polo team and the two field hockey teams.

This time, the opening ceremony did indeed take place and the athletes will begin their competition in 24 of the 45 Olympic disciplines, Saturday, July 27 in Paris (live on France Télévisions and france.tv). For this first day of events, several medals will be awarded in judo (women’s -48 kg and men’s -60 kg), fencing (women’s individual épée and men’s individual sabre), shooting (mixed team rifle), women’s 3 m diving, swimming (men’s and women’s 400 m freestyle, men’s and women’s 4×100 m freestyle relay), men’s skateboarding, cycling (men’s and women’s time trial) and men’s rugby 7s.
The three events not to be missed: rugby 7s, handball, swimming
Third and final day of competition for the French men’s rugby 7s team. Qualified for the semi-finals (from 3:30 p.m.), Antoine Dupont and his teammates will try to invite themselves for the first time to the final of the Olympic tournament (7:45 p.m.).
It is one of the most anticipated matches, one of the most contested posters in the last four of the major handball competitions: the match between France and Denmark (4 p.m.). A rematch of the final of the last Euro, won in extra time by Nikola Karabatic’s teammates, this clash pits two contenders for the title against each other.
On the Paris La Défense Arena pool side, the first day of swimming will end with one of the major events of the program: the women’s and men’s 4x100m freestyle relay finals (at 9:34 p.m. and 9:44 p.m.). In both races, the United States and Australia will engage in a new battle.
The three Frenchmen to watch: Wembanyama, Boukli, Mkheidze
He is one of the most anticipated French athletes of these Olympic Games. At 20, Victor Wembanyama, after having played his first season in the NBA with the San Antonio Spurs, is playing his first tournament with the French basketball team. In the Pierre-Mauroy stadium in Villeneuve-d’Ascq (North), the Blues challenge Brazil (5:15 p.m.), qualified after winning the Olympic qualifying tournament in Riga in July.
At 25 years old, judoka Shirine Boukli (-48 kg) will compete in her second Olympic Games in Paris. Vice-world champion in Doha and European champion in Montpellier in 2023, the Frenchwoman is aiming for a first Olympic podium. Same ambition for her compatriot Luka Mkheidze (-60 kg), already adorned with bronze in Tokyo, and also European champion in 2023.

Fencing will also be in the spotlight with medals awarded in women’s épée and men’s sabre. Other finals on the programme: women’s 3m diving, men’s team rifle shooting, and skateboarding. In terms of team sports, the French team has several challenges. The footballers are up against Guinea, the water polo girls against the Spanish Olympic vice-champions, while the French hockey players will enter the competition in Colombes. The men will face the reigning world champions Germany, the women the Dutch Olympic champions.
