(Miami) The Miami Dolphins have signed quarterback Tua Tagovailoa to a four-year, $212.4 million contract extension, it was reported Friday.
With an average of $53.1 million per year, Tagovailoa will rank third in the NFL for quarterback salaries, behind Trevor Lawrence of the Jaguars and Joe Burrow of the Bengals.
The agreement includes $167 million guaranteed.
The contract extension will keep Tagovailoa with Miami through the end of 2028.
ESPN first reported it, attributing the terms to the agency that represents Tagovailoa, Athletes First.
The Dolphins have not announced the contract, but they did release a brief video featuring Tagovailoa on X Friday afternoon.
Tagovailoa was still playing under the contract he signed when the Dolphins selected him with the fifth overall pick in the 2020 draft.
Tagovailoa wanted a pact similar to those of Burrow and Justin Herbert, drafted the same year as him.
After their rookie contracts ended, Burrow and Herbert signed long-term deals worth more than $200 million each.
Tagovailoa suffered multiple concussions in his first three seasons.
However, he has positioned himself for a big pay raise with a very productive 2023 season while avoiding injuries.
He led the NFL with 4,624 passing yards. He also finished fifth in the league with 29 touchdown passes.
Miami, however, was defeated in the first round by the Kansas City Chiefs, who would go on to win the Super Bowl.
