It’s 2052, experience the opening ceremony of the Paris Games in (almost) real time in a warmer climate

The eyes of the world are on Paris and the 2024 Olympic Games, whose opening ceremony takes place on Friday, July 26. But read this carefully: here, we are in June 2052, in a world even more disrupted by climate change. Franceinfo is taking advantage of this fortnight to imagine what these same Paris Games could look like in twenty-eight years.

Franceinfo has chosen to tell, in (almost) real time, six significant days of these Olympic and Paralympic Games of the future. A story of anticipation based on current knowledge, supported by reports and interviews with climate science researchers and personalities from the world of sport (see our methodology). The final scenario describes a Games marked by a chosen sobriety and a recourse to technology, sometimes synonymous with maladaptation.

Organization postponed to June, limited travel, disciplines that have disappeared or are forced to evolve, consequences of the effects of heat on the human body… Project yourself into the heart of the biggest sporting event adapted (or not) to the average increase of 2.7°C in France compared to the pre-industrial era. Here is the story of the first day, during which the new face of Paris and the Games of tomorrow is already taking shape. Time for the opening ceremony, with a parade of athletes very different from today’s.
