The future of Samuel Umtiti (24) took an unexpected turn on Monday January 10. Outside the plans of FC Barcelona since 2019 because of too recurring injuries, and used only once in a match this season, the world champion has signed a new contract binding him until 2026 with the club blaugrana.
FC Barcelona and @samumtiti have reached an agreement to extend the latter’s contract until 30 June 2026. The French defender is reducing a part of the salary that he was due to receive in the year and a half remaining on his contract.

In an official statement, Barça insisted on “publicly express gratitude“towards the player”for his availability and the affection he has shown towards the club“because the latter agreed to lower his salary, including the one he was to receive until the summer of 2023, according to his previous contract. Where we could have read a mark of confidence, or even a promotion, he must be seen as a service rendered by the player to the club.
The legendary Spanish club found itself in a delicate situation this winter. He secured the services of international Ferran Torres, spending nearly € 55m to bring him from Manchester City, but the validation of his transfer was blocked by the Spanish Football League, targeting a non-compliance financial fair play.
When he only points to a mediocre sixth place in his national championship and where he is already no longer in the Champions League, the Catalan club was forced to reduce part of its expenses to save this long-awaited reinforcement.
