What to do this weekend of July 27 and 28?

For the love of pollinators

As their population declines dramatically, we are more aware than ever of the role pollinators play in the proper functioning of our ecosystems and our daily lives. To raise public awareness of the role and protection of butterflies, bees and other beetles, the Montreal Insectarium is organizing the 2e edition of Butineries. Throughout the weekend, experts will provide information on greening urban habitats, the monarch butterfly, pollen and native plants. In addition to fun activities for the youngest, the event will feature two unique shows combining dance, music… and insects. Intriguing.

The art of ceramics

Until August 18, the charming village of Val-David is hosting the largest ceramics gathering in Canada. Some one hundred ceramists from Quebec and elsewhere will exhibit their creations as part of 1001 pots. Visitors of all ages can participate in conferences, flower-making workshops and ceramic shaping and throwing classes over the weekend, in addition to being entertained by jazz performances, as well as puppet theatre and masked plays. A great opportunity to try out a new hobby.

Take a landscape

For over 40 years, historian and photographer Pierre Lahoud has crisscrossed the Quebec skies to capture on film the most spectacular places in Quebec’s landscape and heritage, documenting the territory, the evolution of its occupation and its great fragility. All summer long until October 6, the municipality of Deschambault-Grondines, in the MRC of Portneuf, is showcasing its most beautiful photographs of the region as part of the exhibition Take a landscape, presented at the Vieux Presbytère. Right next door, at the Moulin de La Chevrotière, the work of Portneuvois artists who were inspired by the artist’s photos and vision is offered in an exhibition entitled See the territory.

At the roots of trad’

Traditional music, storytelling, dance and crafts are in the spotlight until July 28 in Joliette, as part of the Festival Mémoire et Racines, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. This weekend, a multitude of free shows will be held in the heart of Parc Saint-Jean-Bosco, in Saint-Charles-Borromée. Organizers promise an edition that will celebrate the festival’s rich history and feature special guests, some of whom have been involved in the event since its very beginnings. La Bottine Souriante, Le Winston Band and La Mal Coiffée are just a few of the groups that will bring joy to festival-goers’ hearts.
