Tornado warning in southwestern Quebec

A tornado warning is in effect in southwestern Quebec on Wednesday.

The Lachute and Saint-Jérôme areas are advised to take precautions in the face of the arrival of “a violent storm possibly producing a tornado.”

“Damaging winds, large hail and intense rain in places are also possible,” the government warned in an alert sent early Wednesday afternoon.

A severe thunderstorm watch has also been issued for the rest of the southern part of the province.

“This afternoon, conditions will be favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that could produce strong gusts, large hail and heavy rain. There is also a risk of tornadoes,” says Environment Canada.

In the event of a tornado warning, the weather agency recommends going indoors and waiting in the lowest-level room, away from windows and exterior walls.

“If you hear a rumbling noise or see a funnel cloud, debris swirling near the ground or flying through the air, or any threatening weather approaching, seek shelter immediately,” it warns.

Finally, a strong wind alert is in effect in certain areas of Nunavik. In Salluit, gusts of up to 100 km/h could cause injuries or damage.
