Tornado risk alert in the Lachute region

Environment Canada issued an alert Wednesday afternoon as its meteorologists are monitoring the arrival of a “severe thunderstorm that could produce a tornado” in the Lachute area. “Damaging winds, large hail and intense rain in places are also possible,” it said.

“This is a dangerous situation that could cause fatal injuries,” the federal ministry warns. It recommends that people in this area huddle in a room on the lowest level, away from windows and exterior walls.

“If you are in a vehicle, mobile home, tent, trailer or other temporary shelter, seek shelter in a sturdy building if you can. As a last resort, lie down on the ground in a low area and protect your head from thrown objects,” says Environment Canada.

In Gatineau, Outaouais, Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm warning “capable of producing very strong gusts, pea- to dime-sized hail and heavy rain.”

A severe thunderstorm warning has also been issued for the areas of Mont-Tremblant — Sainte-Agathe, Sainte-Adèle — Saint-Sauveur, Soulanges, Valleyfield — Beauharnois, Low — Wakefield, Fort William — Shawville and Huntingdon.
