Russian suspected of planning “destabilization during the Olympic Games” imprisoned

A man of Russian nationality, born in 1984, was indicted and placed in provisional detention on Tuesday July 23, the Paris prosecutor’s office said, confirming information from the ParisianHe is suspected of having organized “events likely to cause destabilization during the Olympic Games.”

A judicial investigation for “intelligence with a foreign power with a view to provoking hostilities in France”a crime carrying a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison, has been opened, the prosecution stressed.

The investigations were launched following a house search “carried out at the request of the Ministry of the Interior on a man born in May 1984 in Russia”the prosecution reported. “The elements discovered during this investigation, raising concerns about his intention to organise events likely to cause destabilisation during the Olympic Games, have led to the opening of criminal proceedings.”he added.

No details were released on the nature of his project, which was not terrorist, as the procedure was not entrusted to the national anti-terrorism prosecutor’s office. As part of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, more than a million administrative investigations were conducted and 4,360 people who could pose a threat to the event were removed, Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin said in an interview with Paris Match on Tuesday, July 23. In total, 880 people were removed from participating in the sporting event for suspicion of foreign interference, the Interior Minister’s entourage announced to AFP on Sunday.
