Toronto Festival | Atom Egoyan to chair Platform parallel section jury

(Toronto) Daniela Forevera “science fiction romance” by Spanish filmmaker Nacho Vigalondo, will open the competitive program of the parallel Platform section at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), whose jury is chaired by Toronto director Atom Egoyan.


The film stars the headliner of Crazy Rich AsiansHenry Golding, as a man grieving for his lover who enters a clinical trial for a drug that will allow him to reunite with her.

Canadian comedy Paying For Itdirected by actress, animator and artist Sook Yin-Lee, is also in the running in this parallel section with a $20,000 prize, along with eight other films from around the world.

Atom Egoyan will be joined on the jury by South Korean filmmaker Hur Jin-ho, whose drama A Normal Family had debuted at TIFF last year, and by American filmmaker June Schoebrun, who directed the horror film I saw the TV glowreleased this year.

Pedro Paramofrom Mexico, the first film by the director of photography of The American note by Martin Scorsese, Rodrigo Prieto, and Daughter’s Daughter from Taiwan, directed by Huang Xi from the HBO series Twisted Stringsare also among the titles selected for their “bold and distinct voices,” says TIFF.

All 10 films will make their world premieres at the Toronto festival, which runs from September 5 to 15. TIFF’s Platform section has featured over the years Moonlight: The Story of a Life by Barry Jenkins, which won the Oscar for Best Picture in 2017, and The sound of silence by Darius Marder, which won Oscars for Best Sound and Best Editing in 2021.

Following last year’s strike by American actors and writers, TIFF organizers have promised a host of stars to visit this year, including Amy Adams, Cate Blanchett and Elton John.

Titles already announced for TIFF include Ben Stiller’s dramedy Nutcrackersopening the festival, Gia Coppola’s drama with Pamela Anderson The Last Showgirland as a world premiere, Sophie Deraspe’s most recent film, Shepherdsfilmed in the Alps.

To close, TIFF will present the first film directed by actress and comedian Rebel Wilson, The Deb.
