In Italy, the environment is collateral damage of the mafia. Roads are transformed into dumps, land is burned to intimidate owners, attacks on nature are on the rise.

Although locals denounce them all the time on social networks, nothing works. In the south of Italy, wild fires in dumps are on the rise. “Hey guys, look what we’re breathing: perfectly pure air.”comments a man filming thick black plumes of smoke near Giuliano, in Campania.

According to a report by the environmental association Legambiente, eco-mafias were responsible for 35,487 crimes last year, or four per hour. The construction sector is largely responsible for this increase. “The most common crimes we record are those related to cement cycles”comments Enrico Fontana, author of the report.
