The Republicans party now has more than 100,000 members, franceinfo learned Wednesday (October 27) from the party, confirming information from the newspaper Le Figaro. This symbolic bar of 100,000 members was exceeded on Wednesday.
This increase in the number of members is notably linked to the prospect of the presidential election of 2022. Indeed, the internal vote of September 24 and 25 on the method of nominating the candidate for the next presidential election endorsed the establishment of a congress on December 4 to make this choice. During this congress, the vote will be reserved for members up to date with their subscription before mid-November.
However, since this internal vote, the party won over 20,000 members. The Republicans then had 79,181 members. This represents a 26% increase in just over a month.
The six candidates in the running are Xavier Bertrand, Valérie Pécresse, Michel Barnier, Éric Ciotti, Philippe Juvin and Denis Payre. On October 15, Xavier Bertrand, who had left the party in 2017, announced to take back his card in order to be able to vote for this congress. He filed Wednesday his sponsorships of elected officials to participate in this congress. In total, “427 referrals” were deposited, announced Pierre-Henri Dumont, deputy secretary general of the party and support of Xavier Bertrand. “By adding the support received since Sunday, we far exceed the 500 signatories”, he assured on Twitter, is more than double what is required by the party.
Four debates are organized between the different candidates before the congress is held on December 4. On November 30, they will debate France 2 and France Inter from 9:05 p.m.
