The names of Benoît Hamon, Cécile Duflot and André Chassaigne are now being considered for Matignon within the New Popular Front, franceinfo learned from negotiators on Monday, July 22. The left-wing coalition has been looking for several weeks now for a candidate to propose to Emmanuel Macron for the future government.

Two public figures had been mentioned so far, before they withdrew due to internal controversies: the president of Réunion, Huguette Bello, pushed by LFI but rejected by the PS, then the climate diplomat Laurence Tubiana, proposed by the PS but rejected by LFI.

According to information from franceinfo, the three new names on the table are not subject to any veto for the moment. Benoît Hamon, director of the NGO Singa, was a socialist candidate in the 2017 presidential election and previously a minister under François Hollande. Cécile Duflot, general director of the NGO Oxfam, is a former environmentalist minister and former national secretary of EELV.

Communist MP André Chassaigne was the sole NFP candidate for the presidency of the National Assembly last week, achieving consensus among all the left-wing parties in the chamber.
