Bonaventure Hotel Employees Launch 24-Hour ‘Surprise’ Strike

Some 200 unionized employees of the Bonaventure Hotel in Montreal launched a 24-hour “surprise” strike on Saturday.

This is the first sequence of walkouts for these workers, who have a 120-hour strike mandate. They hope that “the employer will hear their demands for improved working conditions and wages,” the Confederation of National Trade Unions (CSN) said in a press release.

The employees of the Bonaventure Hotel are part of a group of 30 Quebec hotels represented by the CSN and which negotiate their working conditions together.

Earlier this week, around 250 unionized employees of the Fairmont The Queen Elizabeth hotel went on a 24-hour strike, announced at the last minute.

“Further work stoppages are expected if progress is not seen quickly at the negotiating tables,” the union said.
