The town of Arques, in Pas-de-Calais, was hit several times last winter. The extensive damage put the residents to the test. Hence the State’s proposal to buy back houses located in flood zones. A dilemma for those most affected.

In the town of Arques (Pas-de-Calais), Henri Puype Street is the most exposed to the risk of flooding. In winter, water had penetrated around thirty houses on three occasions. The State offered to buy the houses of the victims thanks to a fund dedicated to natural disasters. Clément Berteloot accepted, he obtained 200,000 euros for the sale of the house, “a relief” according to him.

For others, like Christian Dirix, 79, leaving his home is inconceivable. He has always lived in his house, which was also affected by the floods. “It’s a house that has been in the family for over 100 years, all my memories are here”he explains. The municipality wants to encourage residents to accept the buyout proposals. “The land automatically becomes unbuildable”says Mayor Benoit Roussel. Several applications have been submitted. Once purchased by the State, the houses will be destroyed. The first demolitions could take place by the end of the year.
