It is both a medical feat and a considerable hope for many patients. Claire, a mother and teacher, is starting a new life thanks to a technique that puts to sleep the gene responsible for her facial angioma.

“I hear the wind rustling in the trees”rejoices Claire. Since birth, she has suffered from an angioma, a swelling that deforms her cheek, compresses her throat and blocks her right ear. She even wore a hearing aid and underwent more than 20 operations. For a year, thanks to tablets, this 46-year-old mother has been living again. Her cheek has gone down and she has regained her hearing.

There are only two in the world to receive this treatment. This therapy was discovered by two French doctors, including Professor Guillaume Canaud, head of the Hypergrowth Syndromes unit at Necker Hospital (Paris). The tablet acts like a sniper on the defective KRAS G12C gene, putting the disease to sleep. This treatment had made it possible to treat children with Elephant Man disease. For patients, it represents immense hope since rare diseases are the great forgotten of research.
