In rural areas of Seine-Maritime, a Normandy company is offering to drop defibrillators by drone. These tests are a first in France and aim to provide faster assistance to victims of heart attacks.
At the SAMU in Rouen (Seine-Maritime), SAMU dispatchers receive 1,500 calls per day. At least two concern a heart attack. In the countryside, the chances of finding a defibrillator are almost zero. To remedy this, defibrillator drops by drone are being tested during exercises. This is a first in France.
Once the victim’s position has been located by telephone, an ambulance is called. For the test, a drone is launched at the same time. In rural areas, the drone and its defibrillator arrive in four minutes. The ambulance needs twelve. Capable of reaching speeds of 70 km/h, this drone, originally designed for filming, has been modified by a Normandy company, Délivrone, which equipped it to make it autonomous. A drone can cover an area with a radius of 10 km. To completely cover the rural areas of Seine-Maritime, around fifteen drones would be needed. The first bases could be operational by 2025.
