Who are the candidates for the presidency of the National Assembly?

MPs will meet on Thursday to vote by secret ballot and choose from six candidates for the seat.

While theThe New Popular Front finally managed to agree on a common candidate to run for president of the National Assembly on Wednesday, in the person of communist André Chassaigne. Six candidates for the post, from different parliamentary groups, are now known. The deputies will meet on Thursday, July 18, from 3 p.m., to vote by secret ballot. In the first and second rounds, an absolute majority of 577 votes is required to be elected president of the National Assembly. André Chassaigne (New Popular Front)

Aged 74, the candidate of the New Popular Front André Chassaigne is one of the pillars of the Palais Bourbon where he has sat since 2002 and chaired the communist group since 2012. He has notably invested in the revaluation of small agricultural pensions. In his race for the perch, he has repeatedly stated that he would maintain his candidacy until the end of the election and that he would not withdraw in favor of another candidate.

Yaël Braun-Pivet (Together for the Republic)

The outgoing president of the National Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet, is the candidate of the Ensemble pour la République group (ex-Renaissance) for her own succession. This former Minister of Overseas Territories was recently accused of collusion with the RN to keep her post, an accusation she defended herself against by denouncing a controversy “nauseating”She is also supported by the MoDem party, according to a press release from the group published on Wednesday.

Naïma Moutchou (Horizons)

Former Vice-President of the Assembly Naïma Moutchou represents Horizons. The Val-d’Oise MP was unanimously designated by the 30 members of her group. Asked about the possible withdrawal of Naïma Moutchou if she did not come out on top ahead of Yaël Braunt-Pivet, the president of Horizons Laurent Marcangeli avoided the question on Wednesday. “When I compete, it’s to be ahead of the others and I’ll tell you about that tomorrow when we have the finishing orders,” did he declare.

Charles de Courson (Liot)

Centrist Charles de Courson is the candidate of the independent Liot group. This Marnais is the oldest deputy of the National Assembly, where he has been elected since 1993. He gained media exposure in 2023, during the battle against the pension reform. Philippe Juvin (The Republicans)

While MP Annie Genevard was expected to be the Republicans’ candidate for the presidency of the National Assembly, it was finally Philippe Juvin who was chosen by the right-wing group, franceinfo learned on Wednesday. National Rally MP Sébastien Chenu is a candidate at least “in the first round”, announced his group on Wednesday, while he has almost no chance of getting the job.
