US President Joe Biden called on Tuesday, July 16, for a ban on the type of semi-automatic rifle used in the assassination attempt on Donald Trump on Saturday.

“Help me rid America’s streets of these weapons of war. An AR-15 was used in the shooting of Donald Trump… It’s time to remove them,” the Democrat said at a campaign rally in Las Vegas.

According to initial information released by US authorities, Thomas Matthew Crooks, the 20-year-old assailant who shot Donald Trump before being killed, was armed with this type of semi-automatic rifle. The young man fired several shots from the roof of a building located some 150 meters from the Republican presidential candidate.

Joe Biden said to himself “relieved” that his Republican rival, who was injured in the ear, is okay after the shooting at the rally. However, he castigated the former president’s record during his term, a “hell for African-Americans”, thus resuming his barbs after having held back his blows for a few days.

He criticized the mention of “black jobs” by Donald Trump during their debate in late June, during which the president himself delivered a poor performance, often struggling to express himself clearly. “I know what a black job is, it’s that of vice president of the United States,” Biden then retorted in reference to Vice President Kamala Harris, the first African-American in this position.
