A single viral video can transform the daily life of a business. Customers and revenue multiply overnight. But many Montreal merchants have learned that popularity on social media brings its share of challenges.




In a bright café, a glass sits on a marble counter. Inside the glass glows a green matcha drink. A barista tops it off with a bubblegum-pink milk froth. This scene is repeated hundreds of times on social media, racking up tens of millions of views.

It features the famous Freddo matcha amour served at Alphabet Café in Montreal’s Mile End neighborhood. Founding brothers Tony and Tom Argiropoulos introduced this variation of their Freddo cappuccino, a traditional Greek recipe, for Valentine’s Day in 2024.
