Scientists have confirmed the existence of a cave on the Moon “not far” from where Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed 55 years ago. And they suspect hundreds of other caves could be home to future astronauts.
An Italian-led team reported Monday that there is evidence of a large cave accessible from the deepest known pit on the moon. The cave is located on the edge of the Sea of Tranquility, just 250 miles (400 km) from the Apollo 11 landing site in 1969.
The pit, like more than 200 others discovered on Earth’s natural satellite, was formed by the collapse of a lava tube.
The researchers analyzed the space probe’s radar measurements Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter from NASA. They compared the results of these measurements with lava tubes present on Earth.
Their findings were published in the journal Nature Astronomy.
