Canada loses to Uruguay in shootout, misses out on Copa America bronze

Luis Suarez tied the game in stoppage time, then Ismael Kone and Alphonso Davies missed their chances in the shootout as Uruguay beat Canada in the Copa America bronze medal match at Bank of America Stadium on Saturday.

Suarez’s goal tied the game 2-2, and Uruguay then won 4-3 in the shootout.

Kone scored and set up Jonathan David’s goal for Canada, which earned an invitation to the CONMEBOL-sanctioned tournament by beating Trinidad and Tobago in March.

Rodrigo Bentancur and Suarez, who came on after half-time, replied for Uruguay, who have won the Copa America 15 times.

After two perfect rounds for the shooters in the shootout, Uruguayan goalkeeper Sergio Rochet stopped a shot from Kone. Two rounds later and having to move the net to prolong the debate, Davies saw his shot hit the crossbar.

Colombia and Argentina face off in Miami on Sunday in the Copa America title match.

Bentancur opened the scoring in the eighth minute of play. He got the ball in the penalty area after a missed clearance by Canada and beat goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair with a shot into the top of the net.

Koné replied in the 22nde minute. He scored a perfect scissor kick over Rochet with his back to the net.

Uruguay quickly scored a second goal, but the linesman raised the flag to signal offside on the sequence.

Canada had the best chances late in the first half, but were unable to truly challenge Rochet.

The representatives of the maple leaf continued to apply pressure after the break. Rochet had to report in the 61st minutee minute to stop a strike from Tani Oluwaseyi.

Derek Cornelius saved Canada in the 69the minute, returning in time to prevent Suarez from pushing the ball into an abandoned goal.

About a minute later, Cornelius blocked a point-blank shot from Brian Rodriguez.

Davies, who entered in the 62e minute, made his presence felt in the 71e minute. After a nice run-up, the Canada captain’s long shot was just deflected off target.

Federico Valverde came within inches of breaking the deadlock in the 78th minutee minute, but the Uruguayan’s shot hit the crossbar.

David, who entered in 67e minute, finally put Canada ahead in the 80the minute of play. He took advantage of a return to the penalty area after a long shot from Koné and found the opening, just out of Rochet’s reach.

St. Clair frustrated Suarez early in stoppage time, but the Uruguay legend tied the game moments later on a cross from Jose Maria Gimenez.

For Suarez it was a 69e goal in 142 outings on the international scene.

Uruguay were then unbeatable in the penalty shootout.
