This is the story of a humanitarian fiasco. The United States announces the dismantling of the artificial port installed off the coast of the Gaza Strip, officially due to technical problems.

A new blow for the inhabitants of the enclave, where aid arrives in dribs and drabs. The artificial port built by the Americans in Gaza, which cost 211 million euros, is to be dismantled. The ships were unloading humanitarian aid for civilians in the Palestinian enclave.

But difficulties have accumulated in two months of existence. Only 4,000 tons of food have been delivered, far from the massive aid envisaged. Boats used for its stabilization have run aground on the beaches. A section of the pontoon had to be transported to the port of Ashdod (Israel) for repairs.

“TAll the segments of this pier depend on each other, and when there are waves, the pins come loose and the whole structure dismantles,” explains Harel Chorev, a researcher at the Moshe Dayan Center at Tel Aviv University. According to him, the structure is not “not stable and not technically suitable for this location”. As a result, the Americans abandoned this operation, which was as costly as it was political.
