In June 2024, 291 people died on the roads of metropolitan France, an increase of 2% compared to the same month last year (286), Road Safety announced on Friday, July 12. The number of serious injuries (1,519) is however down by 12% compared to that of June 2023, according to estimates from the National Interministerial Road Safety Observatory.

Road safety focuses on a “huge increase” deaths for passenger vehicle users with 145 killed, or 26 more compared to June 2023, but also pedestrians, with 33 killed (+5 killed compared to June 2023).

The press release highlights a drop in mortality for users of motorized two-wheelers, cyclists and those under 18. Given these estimates and the period of “big vacation departures”the interministerial delegate for road safety, Florence Guillaume, calls for caution in the face of “fatigue and inattention”, that she considers “involved in too many motorway accidents”.
