French rugby team players Hugo Auradou and Oscar Jegou, accused of rape by a woman, were brought before the Mendoza public prosecutor’s office on Friday, July 12, for a “arraignment hearing”. The 20 and 21-year-old rugby players arrived Thursday evening in Mendoza, in the northwest of Argentina. Placed in provisional detention upon their arrival, after a journey of more than 1,000 km from Buenos Aires where they were arrested on Monday, the two players took underground tunnels to reach the courtroom where the media do not have access.
According to Mendoza’s attorney general, Daniela Chaler, “the deposition [de la plaignante] was quite long, complete, detailed and corresponded, for the time being, to the forensic conclusions”. The victim was hospitalized on Thursday, according to her lawyer. She is suffering “from a general decompensation of the body following everything that happened and is hospitalized”reports Natacha Romano.
The players’ lawyer, Cuneo Libarona, will request house arrest, arguing that“there is no danger of escape”Pau second row, Hugo Auradou, 20, and La Rochelle third row, Oscar Jegou, 21, admit to having had “a sexual relationship” but have “firmly denied any form of violence” on the night of Saturday to Sunday at the Diplomatic Hotel in Mendoza where French players and staff were staying, after the victory (28-13) of the French XV against the Argentinians.
