Another strike is planned in the ferry sector, this time in Sorel-Tracy and Isle-aux-Coudres.
The Metalworkers union, affiliated with the FTQ, which represents the workers concerned, announced that it had sent a strike notice for the ferry linking Sorel-Tracy to Saint-Ignace-de-Loyola, from July 19 at 7 a.m. to July 22 at 6:59 a.m.
The second ferry affected by a walkout is the one that connects Isle-aux-Coudres to Saint-Joseph-de-la-Rive. This time, the walkout would take place from July 19 at 6 a.m. to July 25 at 5:59 a.m.
The Administrative Labour Court has not yet ruled on the essential services to be maintained during the strike.
The main points of dispute are wages and hours, the union reports.
“Our members are tired of working for wages below the industry average,” says Luc Laberge, union representative for the Metalworkers.
Last week, Treasury Board President Sonia LeBel indicated that the employer, the Société des traversiers du Québec, already had “all the necessary means to reach a fair and equitable agreement” with the union members.
“We understand that the strike may have an impact on the tourist season. However, the pressure tactics belong to the union and the Société des traversiers du Québec (STQ) is responsible for its negotiation,” she commented.
