UN ‘appalled’ by new calls for evacuations

The Israeli military has called on residents of downtown Gaza City neighborhoods to evacuate, after issuing two similar warnings since June 27, forcing tens of thousands onto the roads.

The UN human rights office said: “dismayed”, Tuesday, July 9, by the new evacuation orders issued by the Israeli army in the city of Gaza, which push displaced people to go to areas “where civilians are being killed”.

The Israeli army on Monday called on residents of neighborhoods in central Gaza City to evacuate, after issuing two similar warnings since June 27 in the northern city, forcing tens of thousands of people onto the roads.

The Israeli army said on Tuesday “continue its counter-terrorist operation in Gaza City, based on intelligence indicating the presence of Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorist infrastructure in the area”.

“At the same time as it issued this evacuation order, the army intensified its strikes in the south and west of Gaza City, targeting the same areas to which it had ordered the movement.”denounced the UN human rights office.

He noted that Deir el-Balah, a town south of Gaza City that residents are specifically being urged to go to, “is already heavily overcrowded with Palestinians displaced from other locations (…) and where there is little infrastructure and access to humanitarian aid.”

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said on Monday evening that the army had issued evacuation orders. “to tens of thousands of people” in Gaza City.
