Athletics | Charles Philibert-Thiboutot sets Canadian record in 3000m

Three Quebecers from the same club were in action on Sunday at the Paris Diamond League. Charles Philibert-Thiboutot was the one who obtained the best result by ranking fourth in the 3000 m and establishing a Canadian record for the distance.

Philibert-Thiboutot, who is preparing for his second Olympics, clocked 7:35.73 on Sunday. Jacob Krop of Kenya was the fastest in the race in 7:28.83, while Australian Stewart McSweyn (7:29.46) and American Sean McGorty (7:35.63) were second and third.

Thomas Fafard was also in this event to make his Diamond League debut. The Quebecer stood out by taking sixth place with a time of 7 min 38.07 s, a personal best and the third best time in history for a Canadian.

Meanwhile, Jean-Simon Desgagnés, winner of the 3,000m steeplechase at the Olympic Trials last week, finished ninth in the same event on Sunday. He clocked a personal best time of 8:13.11 to finish 10.75 seconds behind gold medalist Abrham Sime of Ethiopia. Amos Serem and Abraham Kibiwot, both from Kenya, followed on the podium.

Philibert-Thiboutot, Fafard and Desgagnés will now focus on the Paris Olympic Games
