The first “encierro” of the 2024 edition of the Pamplona festivities has caused damage. Six people were injured on Sunday, July 7, during the traditional running of the bulls in the streets of the Spanish city, according to the authorities. Five of the injured, including a 54-year-old American, suffered shocks and the last, a 37-year-old Spaniard, was lightly hit by a bull’s horn.

The “encierros” cause dozens of injuries each year. Sixteen people have been killed since 1911, when data was first compiled. In 2009, a 27-year-old Spaniard died after being gored by a bull.

The San Firmin festivities, during which participants dress in red and white, attract visitors from all over the world. For eight days, at 8am, hundreds of people race down the cobbled streets of Pamplona for about 850 metres in front of six fighting bulls, with the aim of getting as close as possible to them. The race, in which anyone over the age of 18 can participate, ends in the city’s bullring. There, a bullfight takes place in which these six bulls are put to death.
