(San Jose) The San Jose Sharks signed Macklin Celebrini to a rookie contract on Saturday, after they selected him first overall in the National Hockey League (NHL) draft.
Celebrini had 32 goals and 64 points in 38 games for Boston University last season. He became the youngest winner of the Hobey Baker Trophy, awarded to the NCAA’s top hockey player.
San Jose finished with the NHL’s worst record (19-54-9) for 47 points, the team’s worst performance since 1995-96.
“Macklin is not only a special player on the ice, he is also a confident and intelligent young man off the ice,” Sharks general manager Mike Grier said in a statement.
“His combination of skill and hockey sense is rare, and we are extremely confident he is ready to make the transition to becoming a full-time NHL player. We couldn’t be more excited to have Macklin officially join the Sharks organization for the 2024-25 season.”
