On motorways, snacks offered in rest areas are often expensive and their taste questionable. Are there alternatives?
On the road to the holidays, at lunchtime, more and more choices are available to motorists. One of the most popular snacks is the triangle sandwich, whose sales increase by 30% in the summer, as well as hamburgers from an American fast food chain. “23 euros for three menus”comments a customer, who considers the option reasonable. In the 369 service areas in France, the food is often industrial, prepared by the same restaurant or bakery chains.
Some want to change the image of poor quality roadside catering. On the A61, near Toulouse (Haute-Garonne), is the last independent motorway restaurant in France, La Dinée. “Every morning we cook white beans, we make homemade preserves once a week”explains Mathieu Furno, the chef. On the menu, typical dishes from the region, with a starter-main course between 20 and 30 euros. For tighter budgets, it is possible to prepare your own snack, the assurance of a meal that is not industrial and to your taste.
