Mixed Doubles | Andy Murray’s Wimbledon career ends as Emma Raducanu withdraws

(London) Andy Murray’s Wimbledon career came to a rather disappointing end when Emma Raducanu withdrew from their mixed doubles match on Saturday, citing right wrist problems.

Murray, 37, is a two-time All England Club singles champion.

He will retire after the Paris Olympics, which begin later this month.

At Wimbledon, Murray withdrew from the singles due to surgery to remove a cyst from his spine on June 22.

In the men’s doubles, he and his older brother Jamie were defeated in the first round.

“Unfortunately, I woke up with stiffness in my right wrist, so I made the very difficult decision to withdraw from the mixed doubles,” Raducanu said. “I’m disappointed because I was really looking forward to playing with Andy.”

Raducanu won the 2021 US Open as an 18-year-old qualifier.

Her career has since been marred by injuries. She underwent surgeries on her wrists and ankle in 2023.

She will face New Zealand’s Lulu Sun in the fourth round of the singles on Sunday.

The All England Club celebrated Murray after he and Jamie were beaten in the doubles on Thursday, including a four-minute video where he received tributes from Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Venus Williams.

Katie Volynets and Rajeev Ram have been added to the mixed doubles draw, replacing Raducanu and Murray.

Murray’s 2013 Wimbledon title made him the first British man in 77 years to win the tournament’s singles championship.

He won the trophy again in 2016.

Murray also triumphed in New York in 2012, finished 2016 ranked No. 1 in the ATP rankings, won two Olympic singles gold medals and helped Great Britain win a Davis Cup title.
