We’ve been waiting for it, it’s now official. Olympique de Marseille confirmed the arrival on its bench of Roberto De Zerbi, Saturday June 29, for the next three seasons. The former coach of Brighton & Hove Albion, in the Premier League, a club he left in May, replaces Jean-Louis Gasset, who retired at the end of the season.
Having played on the benches of Sassuolo (2018-2021), Shakhtar Donetsk (2021-2022) and Brighton (2022-2024), he notably crossed paths with the Phocéens with the latter, in the group stage of the Europa League. After a draw between the two teams (2-2) in the first match, the Seagulls won at home (1-0).
“I am very happy to get involved with Olympique de Marseille, the coach said in the club’s press release. I felt a very strong desire to join this club. (…) I can’t wait to sit on the bench at the Orange Vélodrome, this time as coach of OM, and help the club regain the rank that Marseille deserves.” The Marseille club finished the last exercise in 8th place, thus letting qualification for Europe slip away. “His arrival marks the beginning of an ambitious new chapter and is an essential element of our strategy for OM’s future successes.”recalled owner Frank McCourt.
